The official was dismissed by the National Assembly and will not be able to hold any public office for the next two years.
The plenary of the National Assembly decided this February 22, 2022 the dismissal of the bank superintendent, Ruth Arregui. The decision was made with 85 votes in favor, 15 against, 32 abstentions and 2 blank. When the Secretary gave the result, there was applause in the room.
After several hours of debate and listening to the appearance of the accused official, with majority votes it was censored. This also implies that Arregui will not be able to hold any public office for 2 years.
Assemblywoman Paola Cabezas of the Union for Hope (Unes) said that her bench would vote in favor of the sanction because its members are “on the side of the people and not on the side of the bankers.” For his part, Ricardo Vanegas (Pachakutik) pointed out that after listening to Arregui’s justifications, he would vote against the dismissal because he assured that it is always better that “there is a guilty person free than an innocent prisoner”; however, in the vote he abstained.
