Experts and activists see a setback in the traffic fine scheme in CDMX

One of the changes is in the officers who will be able to infracte: now only 400 policemen who make up a specialized body of the Undersecretary of Traffic Control, will be authorized to fine drivers by registering the offense through a mobile application on an electronic device. .

Areli Carreón, founder of the Bicitekas AC organization, considers that this number of elements will be insufficient for the number of vehicles that circulate each day in the capital.

“It is a ridiculous number, 400 police officers authorized to infractions when the vehicle fleet of Mexico City is five million vehicles. All for the sake of people feeling that there is no corruption or a collection spirit, ”he says in an interview.

The traffic fine scheme announced by Mexico City contemplates the application of discounts on the payment of fines ranging from 90% during the first 10 days to 50% if it is settled between the 11th and the 30th.

For Carreón, these measures give the perception that committing infractions is cheap and has few consequences.

“This low level of compliance with the Regulation can be aggravated because it is cheaper and easier, without serious consequences for the pocket or the comfort of the citizen,” he says.

The director of ITDP in Latin America, Bernardo Baranda, considers the announcement by the capital government a setback in the mobility and road safety policy.

“Surely they are going to be popular measures among motorists, but in terms of a road safety policy and respect for the Traffic Regulations, especially for the most vulnerable road users and coexistence on the streets. I think it’s a setback,” says Baranda.
