Nine former presidents of the Christian Democracy (DC) -among them the exmandatario Eduardo Frey and the conventional Fuad Chahin– asked the president of the community, Philip Delpinfreedom of action for the militants in view of the plebiscite for the draft of the new Constitution, which will take place on September 4.
“We come to ask you and all the members of the party’s decision-making bodies to agree on freedom of action for the militants for the constitutional plebiscite on September 4,” the letter indicates.
“We would have liked a well-founded, clear and proactive position, but the form established around a binary choice, of two options, Approve or Reject, does not allow us nuances or changes,” they added.
“We ask our comrades to resort to the internal directive bodies of the PDC to resolve controversies and that their members, the National Directorate, the National Board, the Supreme Court, among others, adopt measures to avoid decisions that do not solve the problems, but rather aggravate,” they emphasized.
“Common Frame”
In the letter, the former DC helmsmen pointed out that the “challenge represented by the proposal for the Constitutional Convention requires a deep and rigorous study of our history, our vision of Chile, the political system, the form of government, and the duties and rights of citizens.
“Chile needs a country project that guarantees us a present and future in which our original peoples and the migratory currents that have shaped our beloved country find a common framework and mechanisms based on full respect for human rights and with the greatest social justice, in such a way that they allow legitimate differences that may exist to be resolved,” they added.
The DC will decide on July 6, in its national meeting, its position on the exit plebiscite.
The matter has caused division in the party: the senators D.C. Ximena Rincon Y Matthias Walker They presented a project to lower the quorum to reform the current Constitution to 4/7, pointed out by supporters of the Approval as a “third way”. The proposal has the support of Chile Vamos.
Let us remember that the Constitutional Convention will hold its closing ceremony on July 4, in which the draft of the new Constitution will be delivered to the President Gabriel Boric.
