Exhibition of Marcelo Pogolotti opens in Havana gallery

The Gallery 23 and 12 of Havana today inaugurated the exhibition Marcelo Pogolotti: the cycles of historydedicated to the Cuban painter, essayist and art critic in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of his birth.

Sponsored by the National Council of Plastic Arts, the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets and the National Museum of Fine Arts, according to Roberto Cobas, its curator, “it is not a retrospective, but a very careful selection, a small anthology of the work by Marcelo Pogolotti.

It opens with the series of our time, which is from the year 1931, where he begins to explore social issues and closes with a work that confronts us all, and is the intellectualmade in moments prior to the Second World War and where the important role that an intellectual had to play at a decisive moment for humanity is revealed.

Born in Havana on July 12, 1902, of an Italian father and an American mother, Pogolotti studied engineering in the United States, where he was also introduced to the problems of philosophy and art.

Back in Havana, he exhibited at the Association of Painters and Sculptors (1925) and participated in the Arte Nuevo exhibition (1927).

Then he went to Europe. The intellectual and artistic experience lived during his stays in Paris and Turin, among the most important in his artistic and human career, would define his way of seeing the world through art.

Until August 31, the public of the capital and lovers of plastic arts will be able to enjoy the exhibition with works by Pogolotti, one of the greatest Cuban painters of the 20th century.
