Exhibition in the Senate honors women in the country's redemocratization

Women in Redemocratization is the name of the exhibition, in the Federal Senate, which begins a series of activities to honor 36 professionals and also six representatives in the National Congress who worked 40 years ago for freedom after the end of the military regime. According to the organizers of the event, invisible women were also fundamental in the formulation of the 1988 Constitution. Among those honored is journalist Mara Régia di Perna, from Brazilian Communications Company (EBC).

The exhibition can be seen at the Ivandro Cunha Lima gallery, in Senado, and can also be visited virtually at Senate website.

The professional of EBC She is one of the most awarded communicators in Brazil and has a career on radio for over 40 years. She is responsible for the program Long live Maryfrom the Brasilia National Radiosince the beginning of the 1980s and, with its citizen agendas, managed to mobilize listeners in that period of redemocratization.

“We mobilize people”

In a speech at the opening of the exhibition, Mara Régia recalled the importance of the letter delivered by suffragist Carmen Portinho to the then president of the Chamber, Ulysses Guimarães.

“We mobilized people during the voting moments that took place here,” he stated.

The communicator explained that, with great difficulty, it was possible to insert into the Constitution that men and women were equal in rights.

“The word is what remains, our action, the transformation and life in common”, said the journalist from EBC. The initiative for the event is from the Equity Network and the Permanent Committee on Gender and Race of the Federal Senate.

“They made a difference”

According to the coordinator of Rede Equidade, Maria Terezinha Nunes, the idea of ​​the exhibition is to reveal female protagonism in a period of profound transformations. She says these women left a legacy of courage and resistance.

“These women who fought hard during this period made a very significant contribution, which made all the difference,” he said.

In addition to the exhibition, it is planned to produce a documentary and also hold a seminar on December 9th, from 8:30 am to 6 pm, in the Antonio Carlos Magalhães auditorium. The event is part of the 21 days of activism to end violence against women and will bring together pioneers of resistance movements.

According to the organizers, the program will feature three panels. One of them will allude to women’s movements during the dictatorship. The second will be about struggles and resistance in the countryside and forests and the last will bring institutional experiences aimed at strengthening democracy with gender and racial equality.
