Between January and September of last year, Mexico registered excess mortality from all causes, with 653 thousand 53 deaths, equivalent to 50.7 percent of what was expected, according to the preliminary statistics of deaths in that period from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
To estimate the excess mortality from the pandemic, it was necessary to consider the deaths that occurred from January 2020 to September 2021, which totaled one million 941 thousand 722, in order to observe the complete behavior, as recommended by the Pan American Organization of the Health (PAHO).
Based on the PAHO methodology, based on endemic channels and epidemiological weeks between 2015-2019, as well as from January 2020 to September 2021, one million 288 thousand 669 deaths were expected and one million 941 thousand 722 were registered.
Based on these results, there is an excess mortality from all causes of 653 thousand 53, equivalent to 50.7 percent
specified the Inegi.
Thus, between January and September 2021, 877,824 deaths were preliminarily recorded in Mexico, a figure 99,888 higher than those that occurred in the same period in 2020.
In 2020 alone, one million 86 thousand 743 deaths were reported, while in 2019 there were 747 thousand 784.
The percentage variation of deaths recorded in a year for January-September 2012 to 2019 was between 1 and 6 percent. In 2020 and 2021 the increase was 39.6 and 12.8, respectively.
Between January and September 2012 to 2019, the registered death rate per 10,000 inhabitants had an increase of 5.79 points. From 2019 to 2020 it was 17.56 and from 2020 to 2021 it increased 7.22 percent.
Based on the administrative records generated from the death certificates issued by the Civil Registry offices and those of the Forensic Medical Service, supplemented by the death certificates, of the deceased, 57.89 percent (508 thousand 177) were men and 42.05 (369 thousand 121) women. In 526 cases, the sex was not specified.
The highest percentage of deaths, 55.8, corresponded to the group over 64 years of age (489,930, which included those whose sex was not specified). In all age groups it is observed that there is a higher mortality among men.
Between January and September 2021, the entities in which the habitual residence of the deceased person was located with the highest rates registered per 10 thousand inhabitants were Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla and Colima. Among the states with the lowest incidence are Aguascalientes, Quintana Roo, Durango and Tamaulipas.
