An increase of 13.9%, in the price of tuition in some private universities and more than 12% in others, has generated controversy, student movements denounce that it is not fair, “not everyone can pay for a semester of 10, 11 or up to 13 million pesos.
Colombian News
Education in Colombia is presenting the first increases in university enrollment and 2022 has not ended, but this time, students have considered these prices “an abuse”, mainly in private universities.
These days the marches of university students due to the increase in tuition prices are in the news.
In videos that circulate on the networks, you can see a large group of students from universities such as Javeriana and Los Andes, in Bogotá, demanding. And in other cities they have also started the annoyance.
And it is that in some races, as it is the case of Medicinethe increase was up to four million pesoss. If it cost 10 million, it exceeds 14.
For many students, this is blown out of proportion.

Student leaders have expressed that it is not only the fact of studying in a private university for the money, “what is happening in Javeriana is also happening in other universities.”
Many remember that the vast majority of university students are from the middle class, and this high increase in enrollment is a very hard blow to the economy of young people and their families.
Many borrow from financial institutions, such as Icetex and banks, to study.
Universities respond
The main response of these houses of higher education has been the global economic and political situation, added to the specific situations that the country is experiencing that have generated atypical economic behaviors.
In the case of Medicinethe increase was up to four million pesoss. If it cost 10 million, it exceeds 14.
Some private universities have been forced to explain each increase in front of the student committees.
Until now, these explanations have not been fully accepted and there is a warning of a possible indefinite strike.
Given the non-conformity of the situation, students from universities such as Javeriana have requested dialogue tables, since they consider that a student decision could come, if the high costs continue.
They remember again that in these universities, there are not only high strata.

The government spoke
A few weeks ago, the Minister of Education, Alejandro Gaviria, presented a model to set caps on enrollment, calling on administrators and teachers to sit down to negotiate and discuss.
Regarding this initiative, which applied to public or private universities, I also express a recommendation: «Do not raise tuition and, if it is done, that the increase is not above the inflation figure, which for October 2022 was 12 ,22 its annual variation».
In other words, the proposal is that this be the maximum limit for the increase in enrollment and almost all the increases have been above it.
A call that many universities have not complied with.
It is the first time in the country that massive protests of this type are known in private universities.
