“Everyone is waiting for a UN pronouncement on Ariel Ruiz Urquiola”

Ariel Ruiz Urquiola

MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban activist Evelyn Delgado ―who accompanies the scientist Ariel Ruiz Urquiola in front of the Wilson Palace, headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in Geneva― told CubaNet that the biologist continues with his determination to wait for the officials of the multinational organization to pronounce “adequately” on his claims.

This Friday, Ruiz Urquila served five days on a hunger and thirst strike to demand the intervention of the UN for the recent prohibition of entry to the national territory applied to her sister, the academic Omara Ruiz Urquiola.

Last Monday, July 4, the Cuban biologist delivered a 57-page letter to the UN, which includes several complaints related to his state of health – the scientist accuses the island’s regime of having inoculated him with HIV – and the repression against his sister.

In this regard, “it will not accept any other type of response other than that firm statement from the UN,” said Delgado.

The activist also recalled that this is the third hunger strike carried out by Ruiz Urquiola, who “in each and every one of them has always said the same words: ‘If there is no firm statement on my complaints, I am willing to give my life.’ . And quite simply, this episode will end with him passing away,” she lamented.

The interviewee also told CubaNet that “everyone is waiting for a UN statement” on the hunger and thirst strike and the denunciations of the Cuban biologist.

For her part, another of the activists accompanying Ruiz Urquiola in Geneva insisted that he “is not suicidal.”

“Ariel has filed a complaint, a claim, and is waiting for a reaction because it cannot be that all this impunity continues like this,” he said.

In dialogue with CubaNetthe activist Beluka Calderón recently recalled that two years ago Ruiz Urquiola had also stood up before the UN to demand that the organization attend to his complaintrelated to the presumed inoculation of HIV to his person.

“Two years later she still hasn’t received that answer and this, together with her sister’s situation, is the reason why she is on strike. She wants to make the whole world see that her sister has every right to return. The UN and the European institutions that do not pay attention to Ariel will be as responsible for his death as the Cuban dictatorship,” Calderón told this outlet.

“We must insist that European officials do their job. The hunger strike will lead to the deterioration of their health and it is the responsibility of the United Nations for not attending to their demands, for not representing human rights, at least not those of Cubans,” he added.
