Havana/For the third consecutive year, 52 Cubans have died in their workplace, one per week, despite the considerable decrease of labor accidents in 2024, which fell from 1,498 (2023) to 934. However, the coefficient of deceased for every 1,000 injured passed from 33.7 in 2023 to 53.3 in 2024, a growth of almost 60%, according to the report published on Monday by the National Office Statistics and information (Onei).
The most problematic sectors were public health and social assistance, with 165 accidents; as well as that of manufacturing industries, with 141. In the former 169 injured were recorded, while the second threw 156 people affected. Thirdly, with lower numbers, the hotels and restaurant sector appears.
The territory with more fatalities was Santiago de Cuba, where 9 workers lost their lives
As for the provinces with greater incidents, Havana and Holguín stand out. The capital, the most populous territory, monopolized 34.6% of accidents: 324 in total, with a balance of 341 injured and 8 dead. In Holguin, 131 labor accidents, 133 people injured and 4 deaths were counted. However, the territory with more fatalities was Santiago de Cuba, where 9 workers lost their lives.
Although the province of Sancti Spíritus was the only one who did not report any deadly victim, this newspaper published the death of Alexei Díaz Salasasphalt plant worker in that territory. The fire in its work center occurred on December 24 of last year, although its death was 11 days later, on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
It is also unknown if the Three stibisters of the Puerto Guillermón Moncada, in Santiago de Cuba, who died in February 2024, they are part of that statistic. Raicol Kindelán Footwear, Yosbani Patterson Duany and Roibel Bejerano Hernández died from asphyxia after inhaling a toxic gas when they were preparing to download a ship with imported rice.
It is also not clear if the following cases have been taken into account: Leonel Carroso Machína liner of the electric company of Havana that fell from a post in the municipality of Boyeros in March; Renier García Gómezwho lost his life after inhaling toxic gases during the repair of a leak in the Petroleum Drilling and Extraction Company of Cárdenas; the Three deceased in two accidents that occurred in the Industrial Military Company (EMI) Ernesto Che Guevara, in Villa Clara; or if Halil Karadeniz and Fuat Türkyilmaz, the two Turkish workers Deaths at the Hermanos Ameijeras hospital after a fire in La Patana Belgin Sultanare part of the official figures.
