Every day more than 2000 migrants cross the Darién jungle

The Ministry of Security reported that in 9 months this year, a total of 151,572 migrants have crossed the extensive Darién jungle, with the purpose of reaching the United States. Of these (107,723) are from Venezuela, (8,579) from Haiti, (4,322) from Cuba and (14,297) from other countries.

Deputy Security Minister Ivor pittiduring the Opening of the Exhibition Trafficking and Migration: Two Perspectives, held on the morning of this Tuesday, October 4, at the Museum of Freedom and Human Rights, revealed that on average, daily, they pass through the Darién jungle, between 2,000 and 2,200 migrants trying to reach the United States.

He added that stopping this migratory flow is impossible, so Panama seeks that “human suffering of this irregular migration be done in the most humane way possible,” he said that there are very specific strategies to quickly attend to migrants either in terms of food, lodging or medical care. “They spend a night or two days there and then go on their way,” he pointed out.

Alejo Campos, Crime Stoppers, explained that this exhibition seeks to sensitize the population so that they can contribute anonymously through the platform to help victims of human trafficking or migrant smuggling.

Campos said that the sample is open to the public and is free. It will be available until the end of October.

According to the Minseg so far this year, 18 people linked to migrant smuggling have been captured by units of the security forces, together with personnel from the Public Ministry; of these nine are Colombians, six Panamanians and three Venezuelans.
