The Premier League season has come to an end. on Sunday, with the title and the Champions League qualifying places already decided but with a tough battle for permanence, in which Everton survived but condemned Leeds and Leicester to relegation.
The ‘Toffees’ managed to maintain their status in the first division from England thanks to a solitary goal from Malian Abdoulaye Doucouré, who with a powerful shot from the edge (57) brought Goodison Park to its feet and beat Bournemouth.
Attentive to what was happening on the blue side of Liverpool was Leicester (18th), who despite beating West Ham 2-1 (14th) could not avoid relegation. Neither did Leeds, who closed a disappointing season losing in their stadium 4-1 against Tottenham (8th), with a brace from Harry Kane.
This victory, however, does not help the Spurs to qualify for the Conference League, and it will be Unai Emery’s Aston Villa (7th) who will compete next season in the third European competition, thanks to the 2-1 victory against Brighton (6th).
At the top of the board, where everything had already been decided, the champion Manchester City lost in Brentford (9th) by 1-0 and runner-up Arsenal thrashed Wolverhampton (13th) 5-0 with a brace from Swiss Granit Xhaka in his last game as a ‘gunner’.
Manchester United (3rd) certified the podium by beating Fulham 2-1 (10th) and Newcastle (4th) closed a great season with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea (12th).
Liverpool (5th) took the lead at the home of already relegated Southampton 2-0 but the ‘Saints’ turned the score around and led 4-2 before the reaction of the ‘Reds’, who in one minute scored two goals to make the final 4-4. With nothing at stake, Crystal Palace (11th) and Nottingham Forest (16th) drew 1-1 in the other matchday 38 game.
