Madrid Spain.- The Ecotur Travel Agency inaugurated this Monday the Biological Diversity and Tourism (Biotur) event, in the province of Holguín, in eastern Cuba.
During the opening, Tourism authorities pointed out that the event will serve to promote the exchange of experiences and good practices between operators in the sector, businessmen, administrators of protected areas and leaders of local communities.
As reviewed latin press, the deputy delegate of the Ministry of Tourism in Holguín, Yuset Vargas, pointed out that “the meeting will connect points of great significance in the territory of Holguín, which has as its starting point the marine city of Gibara.”
For his part, Yoel Domínguez, director of the Ecotur Travel Agency Oriente Branch, indicated that those who participate in the event will follow the route recreated by Christopher Columbus in the logbook of his first voyage along the Cuban coast.
A colloquium on the “assessment of ecosystem goods and services as an alternative for the development of sustainable tourism north of Holguin” is also included.
Ecotur also presented the main nature tourism products in this region; among them the Salto del Guayabo, in Pinares de Mayarí and Mount Cabaniguán, the world’s largest reserve for the Acutus or American crocodile species, south of the province of Las Tunas.
In recent times, the Cuban Government, in its eagerness to develop the tourism sector and reach 2.5 million visitors to the Island, has been promoting the modality of sustainable tourism.
Last May, the Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment, Elba Rosa Pérez, ad that the country was implementing measures to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism.
At the meeting “For tourism for all generations”, which took place in Varadero, he referred to the importance of the sector for the economic progress of the country and considered that the Island had “potential” to develop sustainable tourism.
