The Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, celebrated the crucial 2-0 victory of his team against Mexico in the second round of group C of the World Cup, where Lionel Messi was the hero of the night with a goal and an assist.
“We already know for years that we have the best in the world. Even the Mexican fans enjoy watching him play”, estimated Scaloni in the press conference after the game.
“We knew the game was going to be difficult. Mexico presented us with a different party to what he had been doing, we already had the suspicion that they could play with a line of five (in defense). In the first half it was not a good game for either of them. We corrected at half-time, we began to play better and number 10 (Messi) decided the game, which is what he knows how to do best. The group knows how important he is and it’s something exciting, in all aspects,” he said.
As he had already done after the defeat in the debut against Saudi Arabia (2-1), then to lower degrees to drama, this time he was also measured so as not to fall into an excess of euphoria just four days before another all-or-nothing match, against Poland on the third and last date of the group.
“We should have a little more common sense. It’s just a football game. I received a message from my brother saying that he was in the field, crying (for joy), that can’t be. It’s like it’s more than a football game. I don’t share it,” said the youngest coach in this World Cup.
“The players must feel that this is a football game. If not, each time with the Argentine team it will always be like that. It is difficult to make people understand that the sun rises tomorrow, win or lose, the important thing is how you did things,” he insisted.
Scaloni already began to think about Poland, the third rival and leader of his group. A defeat in that match would be lethal for the Albiceleste and would send it back to Buenos Aires.
“We must play another game. Always with our heads held high and with humility, to know that we did nothing. We have to continue on this path,” she said.
“Poland is very difficult, everyone plays differently (when they play with Argentina). And they don’t just change because of Leo (Messi), but because of the many other players we have and because of the respect they have for Argentina. That magnifies the entity of the party. We are going to win the match, which is what we all want,” he said confidently.
Scaloni considered “exciting” see the effort and the game of his pupils.
“Whoever does not feel identified with this team It is because he does not love the Argentine team. It is incredible how they leave everything, how they represent the shirt of the selection”, he was proud.
