Evacuations in Crimea due to a large fire at a military base

A fire broke out at the military training ground in the Kirovske districton the Crimean peninsula, forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people and the closure of a nearby highway, the Moscow-backed governor of Crimea said on Wednesday (07.19.2023).

“It is planned to temporarily evacuate the more than 2,000 residents”said Governor Sergei Aksyonov, through the Telegram messaging application.

Two Russian online media, Mash and Baza, close to Moscow’s security services, reported that detonations had been heard in the area for two hours. According to Mash, there is an ammunition warehouse on fire. For their part, the Russian authorities, including the army, did not confirm the ammunition explosion or point to possible causes of the fire.

On the sidelines, Russian Telegram channels and Ukrainian media reported that a ammunition depot was burning at the base after a nighttime Ukrainian airstrike.
