The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, assured this Wednesday that the European Union will do “everything possible” so that Ukraine “wins the war” against Russia, which invaded the country on February 24. LThe statements were made during a joint press conference with the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, in kyiv.

“You are not alone. We are with you and we will do everything possible to support your efforts and make Ukraine win the war, because that is what we want,” said Michel, who also assured that Putin “will not succeed in destroying the sovereignty of Ukraine nor divide the European Union”. In addition, he praised the ability of the Twenty-Seven to “make decisions together, unanimously” on sanctions against Russia.

Michel also said that the European Union will hold a donor conference on May 5, which will have the support of all the states of the Union, in addition to other international actors. The purpose of the money collected will be to keep the Ukrainian economy afloat during the period of the war.as well as helping to rebuild the country after the conflict.

Zelensky, for his part, assured that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is “a priority for our state, for the strength of our people.” Likewise, he reiterated that a round of community sanctions against Russia without an oil embargo will be “empty” and will not be “powerful enough.” That is why he reiterated the need to “do everything possible to deprive Russia of the possibilities of financing this war.”

He also called for all Russian banks to be excluded from the SWIFT system and for “every Russian official and their families to feel the action of the sanctions and the consequences of their personal support for the war on their skin.”

“Sooner or later we will turn against oil and gas, I am personally convinced,” Michel said, in response to Zelensky’s request. The Belgian politician recalled that the EU has decided to end its dependency “as soon as possible” and that it is working hard with its allies to achieve that goal. “You demonstrate every day a total commitment to democracy, freedom and fundamental principles and values,” he told the Ukrainians.

During his visit, Michel met with the Ukrainian authorities, in addition to visiting Borodianka, one of the towns where hundreds of civilian bodies abandoned in the streets have been revealed. or in mass graves after the flight of the Russian occupiers.
