MADRID, Spain.- The European Union (EU) announced this Saturday that it will donate one million euros in humanitarian aid to Cuba to help people affected by the impact of Hurricane Ian, which affected the island on September 27.
Through a release The EU noted that the funding will be provided to EU humanitarian partners operating on the ground to meet the immediate needs of the most vulnerable, including through the provision of temporary emergency shelter, water and sanitation services.
The note also cites the Commissioner for Crisis Management, in charge of European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid and European Emergency Response Coordinator, Janez Lenarcic, who expressed that the European Union “is in full solidarity with the Cuban people at this time hard. The course of Hurricane Ian caused a devastating impact in several areas of the country. Our emergency aid will help provide vital support to those affected directly on the ground.”
In recent days, aid has arrived in Cuba from Mexico, Venezuela and Argentina, as well as from the World Health Organization (WHO) and its regional affiliate in the Americas.
After the passage of Hurricane Ian, a general blackout occurred on the Island. In addition, the meteorological phenomenon caused damage in around 100,000 homes, and serious damage to agriculture and infrastructure, mainly in Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.
Among the most affected sectors was the tobacco industry, which, according to the Cuban government, received “the greatest blow that the tobacco infrastructure has suffered throughout its history.”
