European Parliament will increase pressure against the Ortega regime through a resolution that will be approved next week

Parlamento Europeo

The Parliament of the European Union (EU) seeks a way to increase pressure on the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, which is becoming more radicalized every day, and for this the MEPs will meet with the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, with whom they will discuss the Nicaraguan situation and agree on a resolution that will be approved on June 15.

The European Parliament, through a press release published on its official website, reports this Thursday that “the MEPs will discuss the situation in Nicaragua on Tuesday (June 13) with Josep Borrell”, and adds that “the conclusions of the debate will be collected in a resolution that the plenary will vote on Thursday (June 15) ».

The European legislative body highlights that this will be the seventh time, in the current legislature, that “Parliament denounces the totalitarian drift of the regime led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.” The issues to be taken into account in the resolution are the persecution of the opposition, journalists, activists and the Catholic Church in the country, by the Ortega-Murillo regime.

For her part, MEP Soraya Rodríguez, on her official Twitter account, recalls that Ortega and Murillo have implanted one of the cruelest dictatorships in Nicaragua, and in view of this, they have been working for months on a resolution “that condemns what is happening and establish a roadmap for the future. We have achieved it! ”, announces the European parliamentarian, without specifying what the “roadmap” they are establishing consists of or includes.

“We need to continue establishing avenues to support those who defend democracy inside and outside the country. Nicaragua must be at the forefront of the international agenda. We cannot ignore them,” says MEP Rodríguez.

Meanwhile, the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, indicated, through his personal Twitter account, that the deputies of the European Parliament will increase the pressure on the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship with the resolution that they will issue next June 15.

The Nicaraguan opposition, in recent weeks, has begun an international offensive, advocating at different levels and instances to achieve more pressure on the dictatorship, including specific sanctions on institutions and officials that help support the Nicaraguan regime.

The organization for the promotion of democracy in Latin America, Inter-American Dialogue, recently submitted a proposal to the US Government to review Nicaragua’s participation in the Free Trade Agreement known as Dr-Cafta, and even asks that they be ” penalized» the gold trade, textile companies in free zones and foreign intermediary companies that help the dictatorship to market internationally.

Also, the Unidad por la Democracia (PUDE) platform requested the Government of Joe Biden to apply the Rebirth Law to officials and institutions that collaborate with the dictatorship and announced that they will collaborate with information on front men and collaborators of the regime so that they are sanctioned.
