For MEPs, it is necessary to establish regulatory mechanisms in social networks, since ideologies based on xenophobia, racism and discrimination are promoted on these platforms and would end up giving strength to extremist groups such as those that led the attacks in Brazil
The European Parliament spoke this Thursday, January 19, to condemn the attack against public authorities produced in Brazil on January 8, urging the Brazilian authorities to guarantee a “quick, impartial, serious and effective” investigation of what happened.
In a non-binding resolution approved by 319 votes in favor, 46 against and 74 abstentions, MEPs expressed their solidarity with President Luis Inácio Lula Da Silva and explicitly called on former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters to “accept the election result”. which took place last October.
In addition, the text highlights the recent decision of the Brazilian Supreme Court to authorize an investigation against former President Bolsonario. According to the MEPs, the former president may have contributed, “in a very relevant way”, with the commission of crimes and even terrorist acts.
For the European Parliament, the incident in Brazil is linked to the assault on the United States Capitol in 2021 and the attack on the German parliament (Bundestag) planned in 2022, as they leave evidence of the “rise of transnational fascism, racism and extremism ».
In this sense, they recommend that regulations be established in the use of social networks to avoid “disinformation and hate content”, since many ideologies are propagated through these platforms.

As a result of the attacks, more than a thousand people were detained.
