The leaders of the European Union (EU) opened a summit in Brussels this Thursday, October 16, to address the tightening of migration policy in the bloc, a “delicate” issue that highlights the divergences that persist in the group.
Migration, once again, is one of the main topics of this European summit, with increasingly tougher proposals.
A large majority of States, led by the Netherlands and Austria, are committed to creating migrant expulsion centers in third countries, as Italy has already begun to do with Albania. Even the European Commission has already announced that it is willing to study this measure.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, suggested that it was necessary to draw “lessons” from the controversial agreement between Italy and Albania.
Even so, discussions are not going to be easy within the EU. Spain, Ireland, and Belgium believe that it is a difficult model to carry out and that the priority must be to apply the migration pact, approved a year ago and something that Germany also insists on.
These countries also believe that cooperation with the countries of origin of people who do not have the right to asylum must be prioritized. A formula, they say, that has worked in the past.
According to a UEA diplomat cited by the agency AFPthere is still “no plan” on these centers, since the debate is still “very preliminary”, and therefore there will hardly be “important decisions” on the subject at this summit.
This Thursday’s meeting is therefore expected to be complicated.
The truth is that the debate around migration has been poisoning the discussions among the 27 for years, but the anti-immigration wave and with governments increasingly leaning to the right in Europe has led to positions becoming increasingly harsher and the taboo of a fortress Europe has disappeared.
