EU studies asking the United States for more exceptions for Venezuelan oil

The EU spokesman said that the European bloc hopes that the oil exemptions can be more and “significant” to help Venezuelans, since it ensures that many humanitarian activities need to be financed.

A senior official of the European Union (EU) revealed this Friday, November 11, that he is considering asking the United States (USA) for more exemptions for European companies so that they can continue exporting oil from Venezuela, without causing any interference with the sanctions imposed by Washington.

The spokesman recalled that the EU does not have any measures against Venezuelan crude but indicated that the US does, although he stressed that there are some licenses that it has granted to various companies, including two European ones.

It refers to the Italian ENI and the Spanish Repsol, companies that in June received permission from the State Department to resume oil exchanges with Petróleos de Venezuela, but only so that the Venezuelan company can pay the debts it still has with both. transnational companies through the shipment of crude oil, although these operations were recently suspended.

He explained that this request that the exceptions be “larger and more significant”, are not related only to the “hypothetical need for oil” of the EU due to the war in Ukraine, but because it ensures that it is necessary to finance “many humanitarian and social activities in Venezuela” and stressed that in the coming months there will be news about the South American country “and we will follow it very closely.”

This request is made known when a parallel meeting is expected in Paris with the heads of the dialogue delegations in Mexico, Jorge Rodríguez and Gerardo Blyde, in order to reactivate said talks; a condition that the US set to consider eventual sanctions relief.

The EU spokesman said that they frequently speak with the different political factors in Venezuela, since from that bloc they are concerned about the future of the country. They insisted that an electoral solution to the crisis is possible.

A early September It was learned that the government of Nicolás Maduro was in constant talks with the transnational energy companies ENI and Repsol, from Italy and Spain, respectively, with the intention of establishing alliances that would allow the development of gas businesses.

This was stated then by the Vice President of Economy and Minister of Oil, Tareck El Aissami, confirming these conversations and communications that the Government has daily with the representatives of these companies.
