EU sanctions 41 "ghost" ships that avoid sanctions on Russian oil: there are 597

The measure is aimed at non-EU tankers that are part of the Kremlin’s shadow fleet and “circumvent the oil price capping mechanism or support Russia’s energy sector.”

The European Union (EU) sanctioned this Thursday the 18th another 41 ships that – it claims – are part of the so-called Russian “ghost fleet”, which helps Moscow avoid community sanctions on its oil.

These tankers have been added to the list of ships subject to a ban on accessing ports and providing a wide range of services related to maritime transport, the EU Council explained in a statement.

This measure is intended for non-EU oil tankers that are part of the Kremlin’s shadow fleet and “circumvent the oil price capping mechanism or support Russia’s energy sector,” he said.

Also to ships that are in charge of mobilizing military equipment for Russia or that participate in the transport of grain and Ukrainian cultural property stolen from Ukraine, he added.

Today’s measure, which brings the total number of sanctioned vessels to 597, is closely related to the decision last Monday by the community foreign ministers to include nine facilitators of the ghost fleet on the list.

“The EU remains ready to step up pressure on Russia and its ghost fleet value chain, including by adopting new sanctions,” the Council said.

For its part, the European Commission noted in a statement that attacking the Russian ghost fleet is “crucial to further limit the revenues that Russia generates from maritime oil exports and impede its ability to finance the war of aggression against Ukraine.”
