After a complaint was made public for sexual abuse against the Congressman of the Somos Peru bench, José Jerí, the Ethics Commission received a application from the parliamentarian to initiate investigations against him. In response, the president of said commission, Alex Paredes, announced that they will not request inquiry powers to gather evidence against Jerí, but will wait for a public ministry report before submitting an approach.
“Here it is not about protecting anyone. It is about acting in the best way and, above all, in strict respect for the rule of law. We have received two documents sent by him, in which he requests that the corresponding investigations be carried out However, we do not have the evidence that the Public Ministry does. ) “, said Paredes.
The congressman said that the Prosecutor’s Office has already received the application to issue a report on the case and that, based on said document, decisions will be made after a previous evaluation. He also warned that, if not obtaining a response from the Public Ministry, he will approach the office of the Prosecutor of the Nation, Delia Espinoza.
“We have asked the Prosecutor’s Office to refer us a report on the situation and the progress of the case. Depending on this, we will evaluate in the commission what a approach to submit to the rest of the members and how to proceed. (…) If we do not get an answer , next week we will go to the Office of the Prosecutor of the Nation to express our concern about the lack of response to the document, “added Paredes.
Alex Paredes and José Jerí belong to the same game
One of the relevant aspects in the investigations carried out by the Ethics Commission is that its president, Alex Paredes, militates in Somos Peru, the same party to which José Jerí belonged before being suspended after the accusation against him for sexual violence.
While Paredes is part of the teaching bench, its affiliation to Somos Peru was formalized in November 2024. This fact raises a possible conflict of interest in the investigation leading against Jerí.
“It is a nonsense and a contradiction with the previous action of the Ethics Commission”
The reactions from the Congress of the Republic did not wait. Before the decision of the Ethics Commission not to investigate Jerí, Congressman Alejandro Muñante (Popular Renewal) considered that an incoherent position is being incurred. He argued that maintaining that the main competence to investigate Jerí falls to the Public Ministry does not exclude that the Ethics Commission can also do so.
“It is a nonsense and a contradiction with the prior action of the Ethics Commission, because on previous occasions they have investigated. I understand the logic that this case is addressed by the Prosecutor’s Office, but this does not exclude the possibility that the Ethics Commission I do your own research.
