MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) reported a fixed and mobile telephone blackout that occurred today in Baracoa and other municipalities in the province of Guantánamo.
In a brief note published on social networks by the telecentre Prime Vision it is explained that the fall of these services occurred due to the cut of a fiber optic cable.
“In the early hours of the morning today, the fiber optic cable was cut, affecting fixed telephony, data transmission and 20 radio bases in the Baracoa area in the Guantánamo province,” the report said.
The statement from the state monopoly adds that the breakdown also left “the municipalities of Frank País, Sagua de Tánamo and Moa in the Holguín province cut off.”
“The specialists are already working to restore the service in the shortest possible time,” the information specifies.
In 2022, numerous Internet outages were registered in Cuba through mobile data, some without official information being offered to the population.
The last of these blackouts occurred between the night of November 25 and the morning of November 26. During that period internet traffic on the Island fell by up to 70%, according to a report from the digital portal Project Inventory.
On that occasion, the cut did not coincide with a conflict scenario nor was it previously announced by ETECSA.
On other occasions, the Cuban regime has chosen to turn off the Internet or limit access to social networks in protest scenarios, such as the days of July 2021. For this reason, Cuba has been described on several occasions as the nation with the least Internet freedom in the Americas..
