The information compiled by Espacio Público reflects the closure of 16 stations during the ninth month of 2022, 11 of them in Zulia
The NGO Espacio Público published its report regarding freedom of expression during September 2022 in Venezuela and warned that the ninth month was the one that registered the most cases of violations of this right so far this year, documenting 27 cases and 68 alleged violations of freedom of expression.
In agreement to the data collected According to the NGO, the media were the main affected by the violation of this right, reporting 21 violations; followed by citizens in 11 opportunities and six social communicators.
The Public Space dossier shows that State institutions were involved in 16 cases of alleged violation of freedom of expression; seconded by the security forces with four actions.
The closure of 16 stations was recorded during September, of which 11 were registered in the state of Zulia and the other five in Sucre; actions that were ordered by Conatel.
Regarding attacks on journalists, Espacio Público collected several cases. One of the ones that stands out was the one registered on September 14, the journalists Pilar Guerra, from VPITv, and Alexander Olvera, from Notitarde, were photographed in Cojedes by an unknown subject while they were covering a demonstration of carriers in San Carlos, Cojedes state.
Also, in the state of Táchira, National Guard officials prevented the journalistic work of two journalists to cover the reopening of the border at the Simón Bolívar bridge.
Similarly, the NGO documented 13 cases of violations of freedom of expression during September related to the Internet and access to web pages; mainly linked to failures with the electrical service.
On September 29, the digital media outlet AlbertoNews reported that its web portal was being subjected to DDoS attacks that prevented access.
The aforementioned NGO registered 19 cases and 27 violations of freedom of expression in the month of august 2022; indicating that it is the highest number that has been evidenced since March 2022, when 17 cases and 25 violations of this right were reported.
The balance indicates that 11 journalists were the most frequent victims and on eight occasions the citizenry was affected. Regarding violations of freedom of expression, Espacio Público documented that at least 12 were acts of intimidation and nine were related to censorship.
