Espacio Público denounced the closure of 11 radio stations in 48 hours

Just hours ago, the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) counted a total of 79 stations closed at the hands of Conatel in the last 10 months, in 16 of the 23 states of the country

The Public Space Civil Association, dedicated to the defense of freedom of expression and of the press, denounced this Friday, October 28, the closure of 11 radio stations by order of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel).

Throughout the day, Espacio Público spread several complaints related to the closure of radio stations in specific states, such as the five that went off the air in Falcón:

  • Falconiana 102.7 FM
  • Corianissima 90.1 FM
  • Top 97.1 FM
  • Party 106.5 FM
  • Metropolis 88.1 FM

The association highlighted that in some cases Conatel’s order was given by telephone, decreeing technical closures due to non-compliance in the “updating of documents” of the radio companies at the time of renewing their concession.

This was the case of the station Villa 103.5 FM, in the state of Nueva Esparta, closure with which some 18 people were left unemployed.

The inquisitorial arm of Conatel ordered the closure of three more stations in Ciudad Ojeda, Zulia state, in the last three days. The brands affected by the decision were Mágica 93.3 FM, Superior 101.1 FM and Melodica 92.3 FM.

In this case, the administrative measure was also determined and reported by telephone, according to a worker from one of these stations quoted by Espacio Público.

“Everything was done over the phone. There was no presence of any official, there was no document, there was absolutely nothing », he detailed.

Finally, the closure of the Catholic station Radio Paz 103.1 FM, which operated in the Guanarito region, in Portuguesa, was reported.

These closures are added to the list of stations that have stopped operating due to Conatel’s decision in recent weeks, while organizations that defend freedom of expression denounce a policy of censorship against independent media outlets.

Just a few hours ago, the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) accounted for a total of 79 stations closed at the hands of Conatel in the last 10 months, in 16 of the 23 states of the country.

For this reason, the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) rejected the massive closure of media outlets and censorship in Venezuela during the inauguration of its 78th National Assembly, which takes place this week.
