MADRID, Spain.- The exhibition “You Know Who You Are”, with works by more than a hundred Cuban artists, will be exhibited at the Espacio 23 gallery during Miami Art Week.
“More than a historical journey through the history of Cuban art, the thematic exhibition brings together more than 100 artists (both from the diaspora and based on the Island) from different generations who share collective experiences but who adopt a very personal approach to their practice. ”, specifies Espacio 23 in its website.
Just as he points out that “the fragmented history of Cuban art has been subject to political readings, to the dichotomy of inside and outside, the island and its diaspora; It has been marked by the intentional omission, by the historical oblivion of talented artists whose forced or voluntary exile removed them from the historical continuum of the nation”, and this exhibition “focuses on the personal journey of each artist to find their place”. .
In the same way, he points out that in “You Know Who You Are”, some artists review the past and present of Cuba, questioning history, deconstructing hierarchies, reflecting on the notions of representation, race, gender, diversity and human rights, while others they claim a connection to the Island by referring to its physicality or its place in the collective memory.
As specified to the EFE agency Anelys Álvarez, one of the curators, the exhibition, which “houses part of the valuable art collection of the Cuban-American businessman Jorge Pérez”, is exhibited in six rooms of Espacio 23, and “inquires into the history and individual and vital trajectory of young creators and avant-garde figures of the 20th century”.
The exhibition includes works by Wifredo Lam, Antonia Eiriz, Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, José Yaque, Iván Perera, Reynier Leyva Novo, William Osorio, José Ángel Toirac, Luis Cruz Azaceta and José María Mijares, among many others. In addition, it includes a performance by the artivist Tanya Bruguera.
The exhibition will be inaugurated at the end of November and will be free of charge.
