Error, the medal to Trump?

Bacheles diplomacy

Behind the Nobel Peace medal that María Corina Machado gave to President Trump there are various messages.

The first of them is the total dependence that the White House has on the Venezuelan opposition.

What did Mexico and Brazil do in the face of the repression of the Maduro regime, in the face of the violation of human rights and, worst of all, in the face of crimes against humanity?

The second message is the happiness that the opposition feels for the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro at the hands of the United States.

For the first time, Machado spoke on the subject last Friday: “If January 3 (the day of the capture) demonstrated anything, it is that there had to be a real threat.” Machado recognizes that his movement did everything it could in the political sphere. “Before, we Venezuelans did what we had to do, win elections, protests, mobilization.”

The third message is the fear that Trump generates in the Venezuelan opposition. The president’s explicit anger after not having won what for him was more than fair, the Nobel Peace Prize, moved the undercurrents of Machado’s team.

The fourth message has to do with the image. It is regrettable that Donald Trump has received, always in the field of political fiction, the Nobel Peace medal. And he receives the medal a few days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) agent murdered Renee Good in Minneapolis. At an international level, it is grotesque that a president who defends this type of inhumane acts typical of a repressive regime is awarded, even if it is in fiction.

The gift of the medal has a utilitarian reading only among opponents of the Maduro dictatorship. Outside of that scope, it was grotesque.

The scene of Machado’s presentation of the medal to Trump recalls the trip that President López Obrador made to Washington to hug Trump and thank him for the good treatment he gave to Mexicans. One of the regrettable and surreal scenes of the Mexican politician who shamelessly boasted of his contempt for foreign policy.

A fifth message has to do with Trump’s objectives in Venezuela.

It is clear that the US president overthrew Nicolás Maduro within the framework of his new security strategy, and for the pleasure of transferring control of Venezuelan oil to him.

The opposition has an objective far removed from that of the White House: to exercise the power that the ballot boxes have mandated since, at least, the 2024 elections.

How could Trump’s interests be the same as those of the opposition? In reality they never will be.
