Eric Nepomuceno: Brazil, a right-wing country

AND

It’s true that In some cities there will be a second round since no candidate obtained more than 50 percent of the votes in the first. Of them, only one has national weight: São Paulo, the richest, most populated and important of all.

There, the current mayor Ricardo Nunes, who presents himself as disciple of the unbalanced and far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro, has, according to polls, a wide advantage over Guilherme Boulos, of the Solidarity Party (PSOL), backed by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose party chose not to present any candidate.

The most optimistic say that in the elections it was clear that the country is leaning towards liberalism in the economy and conservatism in customs. Those who call themselves more realistic prefer to highlight that, more than on previous occasions, the current election made it evident that Brazil is irremediably a right-wing country. Ignorant, amnesiac and boundless conservatism.

Of the 5,740 Brazilian municipalities, 1,683 chose to elect mayors resoundingly supportive of Bolsonaro. It is estimated that the same oscillates between supporting the far-right and staying at a prudent distance, to avoid direct interventions, and Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party (PT) won in 248.

The truth is that to understand a scenario that since the coup carried out by Congress and that removed Dilma Rousseff from the presidency, installing a corrupt man named Michel Temer in her place, it is necessary to go back very far, to another coup, the military committed in 1964.

There is a curiosity. In Brazil, April 1st is the Day of Lies, which in some Hispanic countries is called the Day of the Holy Innocents.

It was precisely on April 1, 1964 that the coup, called the Liberating Revolution, was carried out. They lied about the date and the baptism of the movement, which had the support of the owners of the money.

The first thing that was done, before even making the political parties illegal, was to liquidate education. And not just the public: school curricula were brutally altered, and in this way generations and generations of ignorant people were created. Those who were homeschooled escaped. The overwhelming majority succumbed.

This ignorance resulted in an amnesia of Olympian dimensions. And so we came to a very dangerous grotesque named Jair Bolsonaro. It was the first time that such a scenario was imposed.

Yes, yes, it’s true. Fernando Henrique Cardoso was elected twice, and if in his second presidency he betrayed himself, it is another problem. That Lula was elected twice, Dilma twice, then Lula once again.

But what is seen concretely, palpably, and increasingly, is that they are exceptions that do nothing more – here the old saying applies – than confirm the rule.
