The labor force registered in the 2nd quarter of 2022 is made up of around 3,708,149 people, 70.2% of the population aged 15 and over.
The Labor Force indicator is made up of people who carried out an economic activity for at least 1 hour in a week (employed) and those who did not carry out any economic activity, were available to do so and looked for work during that time (unemployed).
Compared to the same period in 2021 (second quarter), the labor force rate decreased by 1.8 percentage points (72.0% vs. 70.2%), which meant a decrease of around 21,762 people .
In relation to the first quarter of 2022, there was a decrease of 1.0 percentage point (71.2% to 70.2%). The decrease was approximately 36,199 people, mainly due to the decrease in women in the labor force (approximately 21,517 people).
Working population
The number of employed persons in the 2nd quarter of 2022 was around 3,458,166, this is equivalent to 65.5% of the population aged 15 and over.
Compared to the same period in 2021 (second quarter), the occupancy rate showed a slight decrease of 0.3 percentage points (65.8% vs. 65.5%).
In absolute terms, there was an increase of 47,239 employed persons, of whom nearly 37,567 are women.
When compared to the first quarter of 2022, the employment rate increased slightly by 0.3 percentage points (65.2% vs. 65.5%), which meant around 30,848 more employed people.
The employed population is made up of people in the Labor Force who worked in an economic activity, with or without pay, for at least one hour in a week or who, although they had not worked, had a job from which they were absent for circumstantial reasons ( sickness, leave, vacations, unemployment, scholarship, etc.).
Underemployed population due to insufficient working time
Underemployment due to insufficient working time affected 4.7% of the labor force (approximately 175,545 employed persons).
Compared to the same period in 2021, underemployment registered a drop of 2.8 percentage points (7.5% vs. 4.7%).
Of the 175,545 underemployed due to insufficient working time, 58% represent women and 42% men.
Compared to the 1st quarter of 2022, the national variation showed a slight decrease of 0.5 percentage points (5.2% vs. 4.7%), which in absolute terms represented 19,076 people.
This segment of the population refers to employed persons who in a week worked less than 30 hours, were available to work more hours but did not do so because they could not.
Unemployed Population
During the 2nd quarter of 2022, the people classified as unemployed were around 249,983 people, of which about 126,751 were men (51%) and 123,232 women (49%).
In relation to the same period in 2021, it was observed that the unemployment rate registered a decrease of 1.9 percentage points (8.6% vs. 6.7%). In absolute terms, it represents a difference of around 69,001 people.
Compared to the 1st quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate registered a decrease of 1.8 percentage points (8.5% vs. 6.7%), with women being the most affected, going from 9.8% to 7, 9%.
A person is called unemployed when they do not work even 1 hour in an economic activity in the last 7 days prior to the day of the interview, they are available to work and they are actively looking for work.
The increase in the employed population of around 47,239 people was the result of the increase registered in the tertiary sector, mainly due to the increase in Commerce, Restaurants and Hotels.
Compared to the 1st quarter of 2022, there was an increase in the employed population of around 30,848 people, as a result of positive differences in the primary (6,952 employed) and tertiary (40,308 employed) sectors.
