Environmentalists denounce a new oil spill in Lake Maracaibo

JYoung environmental activists from Carabobo, Zulia and Anzoátegui moved to the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo to document a new oil spill that occurred in the area. Gabriel Cabrera, director of the Center for Activism and Democratic Development CDDLatAm, pointed out that the spills are constant and have not stopped occurring for years, while the administration of Nicolás Maduro does not carry out any action to contain and mitigate the environmental impact in the area.


A group of environmental activists traveled to the town of Cabimas, in Zulia state, to document a new oil spill in the area, made visible on November 21, through remote satellite images shared publicly on the web. social Twitter.

Members of the Center for Activism and Democratic Development for the Region (CDDLatAm), Fridays for Future Venezuela, together with the environmental work group of the Young Citizen Innovation Laboratory, reported that for two years they have visited sectors of Zulia state to document what they call , a serious environmental emergency with perverse effects on the humanitarian emergency and the full development of economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.

Gabriel Cabrera, director of the Center for Activism and Democratic Development CDDLatAm, pointed out that these spills are constant and have not stopped occurring for years, while the administration of Nicolás Maduro does not take any action to contain and mitigate the environmental impact in the area.

“We have denounced during the last 2 years the constant oil spills caused by the dismantling of oil rigs to be sold as scrap and by the negligence of the State in the terrible administration of the state company PDVSA,” said Cabrera.

For her part, Wandy Guaicara, national coordinator of the YouthLAB Youth Citizen Innovation Laboratory, emphasized how these oil spills represent a serious violation of rights, causing more poverty in these vulnerable communities, caused by fishing. An activity highly affected by the oil spill crisis.

Finally, Valmore Montiel, coordinator of the YouthLab Citizen Innovation Laboratory in Zulia state, mentioned the importance of generating proposals on public policies to mitigate the impact of climate change and its relationship with the extraction of fossil fuels and constant emissions. of carbon dioxide (CO2) emanating from the oil industry.

The organizations hope to present these complaints before United Nations organizations as proof of the human rights violations committed by action and omission of the Venezuelan State with a direct impact on climate change, public health and biodiversity.
