Santo Dominigo.- The environmentalist Domingo Abreu Collado, denounced this Friday that employees of the Minera Gat-Sa company intimidated him while inspecting the supposed damage to the Furnia 3 system, in the Cuevas del Pomier.
The environmentalist said that, during the tour, to evaluate the environmental impact on the Cuevasun Group of Workers, identified with corporate uniforms, and other small miners surrounded the Environment Procurator and the present technical team. Among them, a miners representative, identified as Pedro Puello, issued the threat “You are on the list” which was interpreted as a risk to their lives for its defense of Pomier.
Abreu also pointed out that this type of threat is not something new: “At the end of the 90s, he had already raised in business meetings that the only way to stop was killing me,” he said, making a call to the authorities to guarantee their security.
Irreversible damage in the caves
Environmentalist Domingo Abreu Cuello said the team confirmed severe damage to Furnia 3 system, composed of three cavities that have been almost completely destroyed due to mining extraction. He also said that mining activities include the use of explosives and heavy machinery to extract stones, which has generated an irreversible impact on the environment.
The Environment Procurator, Francisco Contreras Núñez, who after evaluating the situation, indicated that he would seek to talk with the parties involved. However, he suggested the withdrawal of the place due to the growing tension with the miners.
Proposals for sustainable development
Abreu Collado stressed the need to replace mining in the Pomier caves with sustainable alternatives. He proposed, among other initiatives, the creation of a Cantería school to train small miners in the artisanal work of the stone, a skill that could take advantage of the growing demand for coastal tourism in the Dominican Republic.
Also, Abreu called on the authorities to prioritize the economic development of San Cristóbal through sustainable projects that benefit the community and preserve natural resources.
Call to action
The environmentalist concluded by urging the authorities to act with determination and responsibility: “Let’s not be guided, let’s not evade responsibility. Pomier needs real and sustainable solutions. ”
The situation remains monitored by activists and authorities, while a resolution is expected that balances environmental protection with the well -being of local communities.
