The Public-Private Trust for the Integral Management of Solid Waste, DO Sostenible, was entrusted by President Luis Abinader and Miguel Ceara Hatton, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, to support the intervention of the landfill and thus control the fire as soon as possible. possible.
In the morning hours of yesterday, technicians from the trust carried out a descent and together with the town hall, forest firefighters, municipal firefighters and technicians from the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, proceeded to carry out a survey in order to find out the current situation and determine specific actions to control the flames that are leaving their traces in the skies of Jarabacoa.
The Department of Engineering and Infrastructure of DO Sostenible reported that some 10,000 cubic meters of caliche would be needed to create a layer at least 45 centimeters thick to prevent oxygen from continuing to reach the gases and thus control the process of combustion caused by the high concentration of gases. The Executive Director of Sustainable DO instructed the management and mobilization of the teams closest to the place and by noon the emergency operation to control this fire was already underway.
Four trucks, three excavators, a backhoe loader, and a tractor were seen on the ground to move material and fill in the most affected areas. Emergency personnel were fighting the flames until early yesterday night. Today at 7 in the morning, the DO Sostenible team carried out the first inspection of the current situation of the landfill and it was determined that at this rate in about 72 hours the fire will be controlled.
The Intersectoral and Interinstitutional Articulation Directorate of the trust, reported that Mayor Torres authorized the use of material from a hill that is at the entrance of the landfill in order to guarantee the supply and expedite the mobilization of the material that will be scattered throughout the affected areas.
In addition, the Executive Directorate stated that DO Sostenible is working to support the operational stability of this Final Disposal Site and as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and the health of the population, an emergency cell is being set up so that the municipal solid waste can continue in a controlled manner and do not affect the area of the fire.
