Santo Domingo.-For next Wednesday 12, trade unionists, businessmen and the government have a schedule to meet for the second time to begin to discuss the percentage of increase that will be applied to the minimum wage of non-sectorized private sector workers, which could benefit close of two million employees.
Until now, trade unionists have raised a 30 %increase, while the government has proposed a 20 %increase.
Meanwhile, entrepreneurs, who will be responsible for effectiveing the increase in their respective companies, are still carrying out an economic study before presenting a formal proposal.
Laura Izquierdo, president of the Patronal Confederation of the Dominican Republic, explained that today’s meeting was protocol and was focused on the sworn of the committee members.
He indicated that an economic team of the business sector is analyzing the union proposal and that, so far, entrepreneurs have not submitted a counterproposal, but evaluate the impact of the increase in the different productive sectors.
On the other hand, Rafael “Pepe” Abreu urged the business sector to present a concrete and negotiable proposal instead of prolonging the process.
He said that the discussion in the National Salary Committee focuses exclusively on the rates of the minimum unsecured salary, which cover five majority categories in the private sector.
In this sense, the trade unionists warned that they will not allow the debate to deviate towards the issue of unemployment.
To the meeting the unionists were with a single proposal and stressed that their salary increase proposal is based on the current costs of the family basket and underlined the need to reach an agreement in the shortest possible time to improve the conditions of the workers with lower income in the country.

According to the analysis presented, they evaluate the different scenarios of increases, in the case of applying 30 %, more than two million employees who work in that sector would benefit.
With the application of that increase, the average increase would be 5,805.75 pesos, while a 20 %rise, as the Government proposes, would represent an average of 3,870.50 pesos.
It indicates that in large companies, the minimum wage would go from 24,990 to 32,487 pesos.
In medium -sized companies, the minimum wage would increase from 22,908 pesos to 29,780 pesos. In the case of small businesses, the minimum wage would go from 15,351 pesos to 19,956 pesos.

The last salary increase in the country was approved in 2023 for employees who earn the minimum salary of the non -sectorized private sector, according to the Labor Code, which stipulates such increases.
