The mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía, is one of the most controversial mayors because of the way he governs in his department and because of his right-wing and conservative positions. The National Party militant was interviewed by the “Posscript” cycle of The Observer and spoke about his passage through Parliament, his vision of being Maldonado’s mayor, his position on having a successor in mind and his relationship with the national government.
Antía acknowledged that she got “bored” holding legislative positions, having been both a deputy and a senator, and that she prefers the executive part, since it is more focused on management. According to him, sBeing the mayor of Maldonado is something that has come as a surprisebut who loves to do things for his community and see how the neighborhoods and coasts develop and improve.
Regarding having a successor in mind, Antía pointed out that she still has no one in mind and that she highly values the internal elections of the party to see who has the greatest popular support.
Finally, he spoke about his relationship with the different national governments that he has had during his tenure as mayor. According to him, he has had a good relationship with the three parties that have governed, including the current president, with whom he says he has many coincidences and is doing many things together.
“I was mayor with all three parties. I was mayor with Batlle and I got along wonderfully, I became a friend. In fact, one day the president called me and he told me “I don’t feel like it, Antía, they invited me to go to the European Gold Coast in France, don’t you dare to go with my wife?” And I went with Mercedes, on an official mission. With Vázquez, from the Broad Front, I had a very good relationship, in fact I made the security agreement with him, I got along well and had a good dialogue. And he was not from my party. And now with the current president I do have many coincidences and we are doing many things together, ”said the nationalist leader.
