Each August 17 in Colombia is celebrated the Day of the Engineerdate on which the work of engineering professionals in all its branches is commemorated.

Engineering is the art and technique of applying knowledge to the various branches of technology. Its activities cover the invention, design, improvement and management of new procedures applicable to industry and other scientific fields.

However, this celebration is not without controversy, since there is no consensus on the date on which Engineer’s Day should be commemorated.

Both the date and the celebrations of this day vary according to the country in which it is commemorated, and are generally related to the formation of colleges or associations that bring together engineers in each country. For this reason, Engineer’s Day does not have a unified celebration date.

For example, some celebrate this August 17, for being the foundation of the Colombian Association of Engineers (ACIEM). However, some consider that it should be celebrated with the founding of thea Colombian Society of Engineers (SCI), which was founded on May 29, 1887

In Uruguay this celebration takes place on October 12 under the name “National Engineer’s Day”. This is commemorated in honor of the formation of the first coalition of Uruguayan engineers, carried out in 1892. Engineer’s Day is celebrated on July 1 in Mexico and Spain. In Argentina, this day is also used to commemorate the engineer, but specifically in the field of chemistry.
