He president of the Council of Ministers (PCM), Ernesto Alvarezoutlined the mission of the current government in reestablishing the principle of authority, recovering the people’s trust in their institutions and opening a new horizon of national reconciliation.
The statements were offered during the ceremony for the Day of the War Veteran and National Pacification, an act headed by the President of the Republic, José Jerí.
Álvarez emphasized that the historical situation has imposed on the Executive the “duty to heal the wounds of disagreement” and to ensure that the democratic system is once again the legitimate space where citizens can freely choose their future.
Authority as a transparent service
The head of the Ministerial Cabinet was emphatic in defining the meaning of the restoration of authority. “Reestablishing authority means recovering respect for the State and order, demonstrating that public power is capable and has the obligation to serve with transparency, firmness and justice”he asserted.
In that sense, he stressed that the commitment to guarantee free and transparent elections is not only a political promise, but a “moral obligation” to those heroes who offered their lives in defense of democracy.
Likewise, the prime minister pointed out that the roadmap for the country requires understanding that “true change is not imposed from power,” but rather it is a process that must be built with the collaboration, trust and cohesion of all Peruvians.
“The Transition Government assumes this task with serenity and courage, aware that each step will mark the destiny of the country,” he indicated.
From external war to internal struggle
When referring to the commemoration, Álvarez specified that the date is not a celebration of war, but a tribute to the dignity of those who fought for peace.
The chief of staff warned about current challenges, pointing out that the country no longer faces foreign armies, but rather internal threats such as “crime, organized crime, corruption, indifference and fear.”
These enemies, although “they do not wear uniforms,” threaten to weaken the country from within, “corroding the trust, justice and hope of the citizens,” he maintained.
Finally, the prime minister paid solemn tribute to all the combatants of the military campaigns of 1941, 1978, 1981 and 1995.
In a special way, he extended his respect to the “heroes of National Pacification”: the members of the Armed Forces and the National Police who faced terrorist violence in the “dark years”, when the Republic seemed to lose hope. “To each of those patriots today Peru says thank you very much”he concluded.
The ceremony, in addition to President Jerí and Premier Álvarez, was attended by the Ministers of Defense, César Díaz, and Interior, Vicente Tiburcio, the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, David Ojeda, the general commanders of the three arms and Congressman José Cueto.
