Rua da Consolação, in the central region of São Paulo, was opened to traffic at around 6:20 am this Tuesday (3). On Sunday (1st), after the explosion that opened a hole in the road, the road was closed to traffic.
In a statement, Enel, an energy distributor in São Paulo, reported that, upon learning of what had happened, it immediately sent a team to the site, and, after analyzing the open crater, identified an accumulation of gas.
“On Monday morning (2), company technicians identified the presence of flammable gas at the site. The distributor’s teams acted promptly and are still on site to support the recovery of the masonry structure that was damaged by the incident.”
The company also says that it “found that the distributor’s underground electrical network was not damaged by the explosion on Rua da Consolação. It should be noted that there were only power cables at the site and no equipment such as transformers.”
Due to the huge hole left open, the road was closed to traffic which had to be diverted. After repair work, a steel plate was placed at the site, making it possible for vehicles to pass through.
Comgás does not identify gas leak
The São Paulo Gas Company (Comgás) was called on Sunday night, shortly after the explosion and went to the scene. The company published a note in which it informs that “after an investigation, no leak was identified, and emphasizes that the incident at the site is not related to the piped gas network.” Comgas did not comment on Enel’s note on the gas accumulation.
Sabesp, the company responsible for water and sewage services in the capital of São Paulo, was also in Consolação, carried out tests and reported that it was not related to the accident.
