Today (4), at 17:00, the validity of the safe-conduct that prevented the arrest of voters in the first round of elections ends.
By rule, in the period of five days before the election and 48 hours after the vote, voters could only be arrested in flagrante delicto or convicted of a non-bailable crime.
In the second round, the measure will take effect again on October 15th.
The ban is provided for in the Electoral Code (Law 4,737/1965). The objective is to prevent any authority from using its power of arrest to interfere in the outcome of the elections.
On voting day, anyone who disrespects certain prohibitions, such as exiting the polls, using sound equipment in the street, promoting rallies, among others, may be arrested.
