End of the year message from the US to Cuba: “May this desire for change be realized in 2026”

In a message addressed to the people, Mike Hammer, head of the United States diplomatic mission in Havana, noted that “ordinary Cubans have had a very difficult year.”

MADRID, Spain.- The United States Embassy in Cuba spread a message addressed to the Cuban population on the occasion of the end of the year, in which he addressed the situation that the country is going through and expressed expectations of transformation for the next period.

The statement was made this December 31 by Mike Hammer, head of the US diplomatic mission in Havanawho publicly recognized the impact that the crisis has had on the daily lives of citizens. “Ordinary Cubans have had a very difficult year,” said the diplomat in the message issued from the X social network.

During his speech, Hammer listed several of the problems affecting the island, including prolonged blackouts, the circulation of diseases such as chikungunya and other viruses, the deterioration of health services and the accumulation of waste in urban areas. He also made reference to the repression that limits the exercise of fundamental freedoms.

The head of the US mission also highlighted the population’s capacity for resistance in the face of an adverse context and expressed the hope that the aspirations for change expressed by broad sectors of Cuban society can materialize in the near future. In that sense, he expressed his hope that the year 2026 will mark a turning point for the country: the United States “wants the Cuban people’s desire for change to be realized in 2026.”

The message occurs in a scenario marked by the worsening of the economic crisis, the shortage of basic products, the deterioration of infrastructure and a sustained migratory flow. In this context, the United States Government has reiterated its position of support for respect for human rights and the possibility for Cubans to freely decide the direction of their nation.
