Enacom authorized the Argentine layout of the longest fiber optic system in the world

Currently, Argentina receives internet thanks to the optical fiber that enters from the sea in the town of Las Toninas.

The Directory of National Communications Entity (Enacom) authorized this Monday to the company Google Infrastructure Argentina SRL the installation of the fiber optic cable system”firmin“, in the Argentine territorial sea, with a total trace of 13,500 kilometers, so it will become the longest in the world to unite North America and South America.

The fiber optic installation will work with a single power source and its 12 fiber pairs will transport internet traffic “fast” and “safely” with a final design capacity of 15.03 terabit per second (TB/s) per pair. of fiber In addition, this network will allow a growth in technological and economic terms.

Firmina will be the longest cable in the world, capable of running on a single power source at one end of the cable, in case its other sources are temporarily unavailable.

“The improvement of international connectivity is considered fundamental by any industry, whatever the sector in which it operates, due to the transversality that telecommunications and information technologies have,” said the statement from the Board of Directors, headed by Claudio Ambrosini .

Also, this will power Google products like search, Gmail and YouTubeas well as Google Cloud services.

The project covers from the United States of America (South Carolina) to Argentina (Buenos Aires), with derivation in the city of Punta del Este (Eastern Republic of Uruguay) and Praia Grande (Sao Paulo, Federative Republic of Brazil).

The project is designed to be a high-capacity fiber optic submarine cable system from the city of Myrtle Beach (South Carolina, United States of America) to the town of Las Toninas (Buenos Aires, Argentina), with derivation in the city ​​of Punta del Este (Eastern Republic of Uruguay) and another in the city of Praia Grande (São Paulo, Federative Republic of Brazil).

The cable is named after Maria Firmina dos Reis (1825-1917), a Brazilian author and abolitionist whose 1859 novel “Ursula” described the lives of Afro-Brazilians under slavery. With this cable, it is sought, in this sense, to highlight the work and pioneering spirit of who is considered the first novelist in Brazil.
