Embassy of the United States in Cuba clarifies that it does not process applications for a new program

The United States embassy in Havana clarified this Friday that it does not process requests to enter the United States within the framework of the new plan announced yesterday by President Biden.

Entry permits will be processed exclusively electronically through the page enabled for the purpose. And very important: the requested information must be filled out by the sponsors in the United States.

The new policy grants a two-year stay in the United States to Cubans, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and Haitians as long as they have a sponsor who is responsible for their expenses in that period of time.

The clarification of the diplomatic headquarters, explained to OnCuba a source from the State Department, is due to the fact that a rumor has circulated on the Island that the procedures begin at the embassy. “No way. The statement is clear,” he said.

Biden: southern border closed to Cubans, Nicaraguans and Haitians

“Yesterday the Biden administration announced the processes through which nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, and their immediate family members, can request to come to the United States in a safe and orderly manner through a program of parole. For Cubans who do not apply to the program parole and attempt to cross the southern border of the United States will be denied entry. They will be returned to Mexico and will not be eligible to apply for the parole in the future”, says the information from the embassy.

On the other hand, the Acting Undersecretary for Border Policy and Immigration in the Department of Homeland Security, Blas Nuñez-Neto, said in a press conference telefonica that Cubans maintain an exceptionality. As the Cuban Adjustment Law exists, after a year and one day they can apply for residency.

“Yes. Cubans who enter the United States through this new legal process will be able to apply after a year to adjust their status under that law that you mention,” the official responded to a question from Univisión.
