The embassy of the Dominican Republic in Haiti reported this Thursday closing its doors until further noticedue to the deterioration of security in the neighboring country.
The entity recommended that Dominican citizens who are in Haitian territory limit movement and have with them, as far as possible, basic necessities.
“In case of emergencies, please contact the following number: +509 2813-0887, email [email protected]”They said in a statement published on their social networks.
Citizen insecurity in the neighboring country is increasing, due to the war between Haitian armed gangs, who want to take control.
On Tuesday, a gang called “Ti Makak” would have killed three police officers in Laboule, a residential community south of Port-au-Prince.
Former Consul of Haiti says in the DR they have “oversized” Claude Joseph
It is also the site of a territorial dispute between gangs that has led to other killings in the area, including those of two journalists who were shot dead in January and a former senator who worked in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and his nephew, who were shot in August.
Police said they have launched an investigation into what they called a “hateful and disgusting” act. A video on social media appears to show the policemen lying dead on the ground, shirtless and with multiple firearms by their sides. “Here they are, here they are,” a man says as the camera pans over the bodies.
Haitian gangs have become more powerful since the July 7, 2021 assassination of the president Jovenel Moise and they have overwhelmed the police, which are understaffed and under-resourced. The international community has tried to strengthen the Haitian police with training and resources in recent months.
