Elvia Barrios denies that there is a "judicial coup": "We do not carry out political persecution"

The President of the Judiciary, denied that there is a “judicial coup” in Peru, in response to the criticisms that have been made against the processes involving Pedro Castillo from the Government and the Free Peru party.

Specifically, the magistrate responded to legislator Edgar Tello, from Peru Libre, who said that if before there were coups, now there are “judicial coups.”

“I think it is a totally inaccurate expression and does not respond to reality. We as the Judiciary through our judicial decisions affirm the value of justice and consolidate a democratic State of law”declared on TV Peru.

Elvia Barrios also referred to the President of the Council of Ministers, Aníbal Torres, who questioned this week that trials have been carried out against people without respecting the presumption of innocence.

“I have always asked not only the President of the Republic, but also the Prime Minister, to measure his expressions, and I have pointed out that in the Judicial Power we impart justice and we do not carry out political persecution”he asserted.

The head of the Judiciary avoided commenting, on the other hand, on the processes that have been initiated against Pedro Castillo’s sister-in-law, Yenifer Paredes, by indicating that there are challenges linked to this case that will be evaluated by judges. “I cannot qualify or give an opinion”commented.

Aníbal Torres, at the Citizen Security Council on August 22, highlighted the importance of working based on the truth. “People should not be condemned for presumptions, for invented clues, which is the most serious thing that is happening”said.

Meanwhile, Edgar Tello, in statements to Panamericana, said that Pedro Castillo should continue to govern until the crimes he is being accused of are proven.

“Before, coups d’état were carried out, now they intend to change the government with other strategies”He commented on Tuesday.
