Through a statement, the ELN indicated this Sunday that “the dialogue delegation has been returned with security and guarantees,” with the accompaniment of representatives of the guarantor countries of the process: Cuba, Venezuela and the Kingdom of Norway.
The ELN asserted that this return occurred after more than four years of non-compliance by the Colombian State with the commitment assumed with the Protocol signed in April 2016, reported a press release from Telesur.
“This is a victory for reason and international law against the intention of perfidy that the government of (Iván) Duque sought not only to circumvent the obligations contracted with the ELN, and with the international community,” the statement said.
In addition, the ELN affirmed that the administration of former president Duque also intended to “cause serious damage to the people and the Republic of Cuba, as the host country for the talks in its commitment to peace in Colombia.”
Finally, he thanked the guarantor countries for their accompaniment and for their defense of international legal principles, as well as Cuba for its hospitality.
This occurs after the rapprochement that began last August between a delegation from the Colombian government, led by President Gustavo Petro, and the ELN to resume peace talks.
Statement from the High Commissioner for Peace
On this subject, the Colombian senator Iván Cepeda Castro published this Sunday a statement from the High Commissioner for Peace.
“The government of President Gustavo Petro today continues to comply with the application of the protocols agreed between the Colombian State and the National Liberation Army (ELN), as a fundamental step to achieve total peace,” says the text.
In addition, the statement explains that it accompanies the development of the operation with full guarantees, while thanking the commitment and support of Norway, Cuba and Venezuela.
commitment to peace
With regard to the resumption of dialogue between the Colombian Government and the National Liberation Army (ELN), Vice President Delcy Rodríguez ratified this Sunday the Venezuelan commitment as a guarantor of peace.
“The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela welcomes compliance with the protocols agreed between the government of the Republic of Colombia and the National Liberation Army for the safe return and with guarantees of the peace delegation that remained in Cuba,” Rodríguez published in his account on the social network Twitter.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as a guarantor country, ratifies its invariable commitment to peace in Colombia and throughout our America,” added the vice president.
