Who was specially sent from the first Government Donald Trump for Venezuela considered that the meeting of Richard Grenelll and Nicolás Maduro could be seen as an implicit recognition of Maduro. He believes there was no need to send anyone to Caracas
Elliott Abrams, who was specially sent from the first Donald Trump government for Venezuela, rejected Richard Grenelll’s visit on Saturday 1 to Caracas and the meeting he held with Nicolás Maduro in which issues such as the release of six US citizens arrested in Venezuela were discussed.
Abrams described the visit of “a terrible moment” and considered that the meeting could be seen as an implicit recognition of the Trump administration to Maduro as the leader of Venezuela.
“If the purpose is to send a hard message about migratory issues, the president could have done it himself. There was no need to send someone to Caracas ”, The former official in statements to US media said.
Abrams, who served as a special envoy to Venezuela and Iran during the first government of Donald Trump, has been a firm opponent to any type of approach with Nicolás Maduro.
The White House insisted that Grenelll’s meeting with Maduro aimed to ensure the repatriation of migrants and the release of Americans, to advance immigration policy. In addition, having made commitments to receive deported Venezuelans from the United States.
