Eliecer Ávila: The generation that brought us down is disappearing

Eliecer Ávila, Ricardo Alarcón

MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban political activist Eliecer Ávila Cicilia spoke this Sunday about the death of Ricardo Alarcon de Quesadathe former diplomat and former president of the Cuban Parliament with whom he had a well-known public exchange in 2008.

“In my opinion, the worst thing about the death of these people is that it occurs at an advanced age and due to natural causes,” Ávila said in a live broadcast from your Facebook profile. “What I really regret is that they did not serve a life sentence, a judicial sentence like the one they really deserve for having caused so much pain, death and suffering to our people,” he added.

Likewise, the former president of the opposition political party Somos + said that he was “very happy” that “the generation that brought us down, that enslaved us, that lived off all of us, that enjoyed the most eccentric pleasures in the world while our The people were starving because of him.”

“Hopefully, with the disappearance of all these elephants, a new stage will take place, a new leadership where, through democratic means, Cuba can be removed from the deep and miserable hole where people like Ricardo Alarcón, Fidel Castro, Raúl Castro and all of them have put us”, he wished.

Finally, he assured that after learning of Alarcón’s death he felt “a little more relief.” “keep dying [los jerarcas del régimen]I think that is good for Cuba”, he concluded.

In January 2008, the then young computer science student summoned Alarcón in a public meeting. The leader’s responses are widely remembered by Cubans, due to his clumsiness in explaining why Cubans were prohibited from traveling outside the Island and did not have full access to the Internet. “If all Cubans could travel, the sky would be filled with planes,” Alarcón said at the time.

This Sunday, official media on the Island reported on the death of Alarcón de Quesada. Although so far no official source has specified the cause of his death, a close relative informed CubaNet, under conditions of anonymity, that the health of the former diplomat was very deteriorated due to kidney problems.

“He was operated on due to a kidney that was diseased, although I am not sure if they removed it. I only know that after the operation the other kidney began to fail as well; that caused an edema and it got complicated, ”he indicated.

Alarcón was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1993, Cuban Ambassador to the UN, and for 20 years he presided over the Island’s Parliament. In addition, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Party since the Second Congress, and a member of its Political Bureau since the Fifth Congress.

In his extensive record of services to Castroism, his role in the campaign for the release of the five Cuban spies convicted in the United States for infiltrating anti-Castro organizations residing in South Florida stands out.

In addition, in 1994 Alarcón led a team of senior Cuban officials who negotiated with the United States authorities to put an end to the so-called “rafter crisis” and established a new migration agreement between the two countries.

Alarcón was president of the National Assembly of People’s Power until 2013, when he was succeeded by Esteban Lazo. Six months later, in July 2013, he was “released” from his duties as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party.
