The president of the Dominican Society of Nephrologydoctor Eliana Dina Batlle, affirms that in the Dominican Republic the transplant processes are advancing; however, there is still very little culture of organ donation.
Diná Batlle spoke during the traditional elCaribe and CDN Breakfast, and assured that many people avoid making donations due to the cultural biases that have prevailed for a long time in the country.
«We have very little culture of donation… because (people say) that if they take my eyes out I will not see God, if I donate my organs I will enter heaven deformed; In a moment of pain, no one is thinking of donating organs,” says the doctor.
The specialist explains that to work on the culture of organ donation, a lot of work is needed, especially in the school environment in children between the ages of 6 and 12.
«That is where the thinking of the person who is growing is most impacted. It is not the same to convince a person of 25 or 30 as a 6-year-old child », she maintains.
Dr. Eliana Diná Batlle was accompanied at breakfast by Dr. Domingo Martínez, who is an advisor on urine tests.
