Elián González, candidate for deputy of the National Assembly

Elián González Brotons

MIAMI, United States. – Elián González Brotons was nominated as a candidate for deputy of the National Assembly of Popular Power, it emerged this Tuesday when the official newspaper Granma public the list of the candidates for deputies of the X legislature of Parliament.

According to this medium, González Brotons works as assistant director of ATEC Comercial (a dependency of the Electronic Industry Company), and was nominated as a candidate for deputy by the municipality of Cárdenas.

In this way, the so-called “rafter boy” joined the same list where Raúl Castro and Miguel Díaz-Canel appear, among hundreds of faithful to the island’s regime.

Elián González Brotons was rescued on November 25, 1999, after spending days in the Florida Straits on a tire. The boy had left Cuba along with his mother, who died during the journey, along with 10 other rafters who were trying to reach the coast of the United States.

“The rafter boy”, as he was called by the media around the world, was rescued by the fisherman Donato Dalrymple and his cousin Sam Cianco. After being hospitalized for a while, he was handed over to his relatives in the United States.

The Cuban regime insisted on his return to the Island, which made possible a ruling by the US Justice five months after the shipwreck, during which he was living with his great-uncles Lázaro and Delfín González and his cousin Marisleysis.

Finally, on June 28, 2000, after six months in the United States that unleashed a legal, family, and political battle for his custody, González Brotons returned to the Island, where to date he has expressed his greatest attachment to the communist regime.

In August 2020, already a young man, received the card that accredits him as a member of the Communist Party of Cuba, an “achievement” that he dedicated to the late Fidel Castro.

Shortly before and 20 years after his return to the Island, the young assured to state media that Castro had been “like a beacon” for him. “Fidel is something like a lighthouse in my life. Since I met him and we established a friendship, the vast majority of my efforts are aimed at making my dad and our Commander proud.”

On the same occasion, González Brotons made it clear that his commitment was to be faithful to the Revolution and “not betray that trust” that the people have supposedly placed in him.
