#ElectoralNotes | Change of government, continuity in power

#ElectionNotes | Elections without democracy

During his administration, the president has exercised power from the first minute, giving his government his very personal stamp.

The constant has been to repudiate everything that was done in previous governments, since in the speech they are the culprits of everything bad that happens in the country, for example: the cancellation of the New International Airport of Mexico City due to corruption (not proven) generated by its construction, and on the contrary the advancement at any cost of its own projects such as the Felipe Ángeles Airport, the Maya Train or the Dos Bocas refinery.

In these six years there was nothing that stopped him, not the opposition, not the judiciary and its protections, not civil society and its protests. Without a doubt, the president encountered multiple obstacles along the way, but when he could not get his will done in one way, he tried another. If it wasn’t plan A, I looked for plan B and if I didn’t get it either, then I went for a more ambitious one, plan C.

The president’s political skill, combined with his great ability to communicate and his closeness to the people, added to his disdain for the rule of law, when it is not favorable to him, produced that week after week, month after month and year after year was accumulating more power.

The cabinet was blurred, the governors aligned themselves, the Legislative returned to the times of the sheep where everything the Executive wanted was approved. Presidentialism returned.

The Judiciary was related while Zaldívar’s presidency lasted, with its conclusion the closeness ended and then the Judiciary became public enemy number one. The autonomous bodies were co-opted or neutralized, as happened with the CNDH, whose head is unconditional to the president. The INAI, on the other hand, was neutralized after its dismantling, to mention two cases. The balances have been blurring.

The Army became a powerful ally, the executing arm of the most complex government actions. Today it has a foot in practically all strategic areas of government, from security work, to port and airport management, to the construction of key works for the administration, and even the administration of tourist centers.

Many things were new during this administration, especially the forms and media management. In domestic policy there was a voice, that of the president, in foreign policy, although the absence predominated, he had the capacity to generate unnecessary conflicts, putting ideology above the economic or commercial interests of the country.
