Madrid Spain.- The Executive Director of Electoral Transparency, Leandro Querido, denounced the objectives of the Cuban Government with the approval of the Family Code and exposed the scenarios in which electoral processes take place in Cuba.
In a conference offered this Monday at the Saint Louis University of Madrid, Leandro Querido pointed out that this code has been approved and promulgated prior to the referendum popular to which the next September 25thso it loses all meaning, except that of “propaganda purposes and to clean up the international image”.
During the meeting, which was attended by other human rights defenders such as Javier Larrondo, director of Prisoners Defenders, and Elena Garrinaga, executive director of the Cuban Women’s Network, Leandro Querido mentioned the arbitrariness that makes these processes invalid from the point of view of international law.
In relation to this, Querido highlighted that on the Island “there are elections in which people vote, but they are not chosen,” since they are monitored by “authorities loyal to power, without alternatives to the ruling party, in which the independent media are criminalized and dissident citizens disqualified from competing”.
“In Cuba, there is no provision for electoral observation, nor any form of monitoring, which places the country in last place in the Electoral Transparency Latin America electoral observation situation index, along with Nicaragua and Venezuela,” accurate.
The headline also criticized the actions of the regime, which has used government institutions, official media and authorities’ Twitter accounts to “promote messages aimed at influencing the opinions of readers.”
asked by CubaNet about international opinion in this regard, Leandro Querido pointed out that “there is iInstitutions in the region that reproduce the discourse of the Cuban regime”.
“But the feeling I have,” he added, “is that the international community knows perfectly well what it is about”, and “we try to describe what this process is like and make it clear that it is not an election, but that it is a process that is not very genuine and prefabricated”.
